New Continental Hotel Stroke Association Charity Ball 2019

Disco in Kernow was delighted to be part of the Stroke Association’s Charity Ball, held at the New Continental Hotel in Plymouth on Saturday 28th September 2019. This event was arranged to raise much needed funds for the treatment and research into a major health issue that affects us all.

The organisers booked Disco in Kernow to provide a full package of PA equipment, background music, and of course our famous disco and we were more than ready for the challenge!

The New Continental Hotel Plymouth

First, let’s talk about the venue. The New Continental Hotel is a beautifully decorated grade II listed building with high ceilings, a large stage and great facilities. It is located in the very heart of Plymouth, allowing easy access, and of course the option to stay the night.

The large function room has a capacity for 350 guests, providing just the right ambiance and an exhilarating atmosphere.

The Set Up

The Disco Set Up

Disco In Kernow attended the venue early in the day in order to ensure the set-up was completed and sound checked well in advance of the arrival of the guests. We put in a high-quality professional set up, making full use of the large stage and with the sound system extending onto the floor level.

We used our blast from the past, retro-looking disco set-up with state of the art technology, providing retro screens, an overhead gantry consisting of spotlights, laser, triple head lights, bar scanners, and the essential wonderful mirror ball. There were also single head and double head scanners, along with the addition of a smoke machine to give that essential Disco vibe.

Despite accurately forecasted severe yellow weather warnings of high winds and torrential rain, the turnout was fantastic! This was a formal dress Dinner Dance event with a sit down 4-course dinner.

All guests of the charity ball looked fantastic and were immaculately turned out in dinner suits and ball gowns, with not a hair out of place despite the inclement weather.
Background music commenced as the first guests arrived at 7.00 pm. Disco In Kernow provided appropriate and discrete background music during the meal to keep the guests entertained and to ensure the best possible atmosphere.

Following the meal, we played music until the secret surprise for the guests arrived. The organisers had booked the Rock Choir Flash Dance Mob who proceeded to storm the dancefloor! They performed a short yet energetic set of songs for a very enthusiastic and lively crowd who demonstrated their enjoyment by dancing and singing along with them.

Following the Dance Mob it was Zoe’s turn to hit the stage. She provided great entertainment with her wonderful vocal skills, singing a number of crowd-pleasing tracks from across the decades. Disco In Kernow was again delighted to be chosen to provide the sound and lighting for her performance.

Following these two performances, it was time for a bit of a rest as the raffle took centre stage. With quality and fun prizes, this raised even more funds for the Stroke Association with is a wonderful and deserving cause.

Next, it was time for the speeches from the organisers and committee members, thanking all those present for their attendance and kind generosity. Disco In Kernow provided all of the PA equipment and sound engineering to ensure that not a word was missed.

Finally, it was time for the famous Disco to be cranked up with the lighting show bursting into life at around 10.00 pm. The dance floor was quickly full and remained this way until the last dance at 1.00 am.

We played hits from the 60s through to the present day. All the party favourites were brought out, including Oops Upside Your Head which gave the guests a good excuse to throw some shapes on the dancefloor. We took requests throughout the night and we fulfilled every one, ensuring a fantastic evening was had by all those present.

The sound system comprised of a digital set-up capable of delivering up to 2000 watts of crystal clear sound from an impressive looking, side stage stack of 8 speakers. We were loud and proud and we did everything we could to give the event absolute justice.

The organisers of this amazing event were over the moon with the delivery and service of Disco In Kernow. So much so that they have requested us to provide the entertainment for the Stroke Association Charity Ball 2020.

This was yet another extremely busy weekend for Disco In Kernow as we had provided a full wedding entertainment package the previous evening. Following the charity ball on Saturday we hot-tailed it to North Devon in gale force conditions to provide outdoor sound, entertainment, comparing and interviews for the Barnstaple Marathon on Sunday.

We must have had about 4 hours of sleep that weekend but we didn’t miss a beat!
Reading this we have hopefully given you even more reasons to book Disco In Kernow for any of your important events. We can ensure trouble-free, wonderfully organised and extremely well delivered entertainment for all ages and occasions and we can deliver whatever the weather!
